Congolese Rumba
This documentary explores the central yet often overlooked role of women in the history of Congolese rumba, a musical genre born in Central Africa. From its origins to its recent inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, rumba has been not only a cultural vector but also a tool of resistance.
Through the journeys of pioneers such as Lucie Eyenga, Abeti Masikini, and Mbilia Bel, the film highlights the struggles of female artists in Central Africa to exist and create in a male-dominated world.
These women had to break free from the constraints of patriarchy and the colonial system, overcome restrictive traditions, and challenge unjust and sexist laws.
